The Future of OTT is Serverless
The streaming industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Viewers demand higher quality, lower latency, and seamless experiences across every device. Traditional OTT platforms built on dedicated servers struggle to keep up — they are expensive, hard to scale, and require constant maintenance.
At Syntektra Solutions, we have reimagined OTT infrastructure from the ground up. Our platform is built on a fully serverless, AI-driven architecture that scales automatically, costs less, and delivers a superior streaming experience — whether you are serving 100 viewers or 10 million.
Serverless Video Infrastructure — No Dedicated Servers
Traditional video platforms rely on always-on encoding servers that sit idle between jobs, burning money 24/7. Our approach is fundamentally different.
We use AWS Lambda functions as the backbone of our processing pipeline. Every video operation — from upload validation to metadata extraction, thumbnail generation, and encoding job orchestration — is handled by serverless functions that spin up in milliseconds and shut down the moment the job is done.
This means:
- You pay only for what you use — no idle server costs
- Infinite scalability — 1 upload or 10,000 uploads simultaneously
- Zero infrastructure maintenance — no patching, no monitoring dedicated servers
- Automatic fault tolerance — Lambda retries failed jobs automatically
AI-Powered Encoding — The Right Instance for Every Job
Video encoding is computationally intensive. Encoding a 2-minute short clip requires very different resources than encoding a 4-hour 8K film. Most platforms use a one-size-fits-all approach — wasting resources on small files and bottlenecking on large ones.
Our system is smarter. When a video is uploaded, our AI-based instance selector analyzes:
- File size and duration
- Source resolution and bitrate
- Target output formats and resolutions
- Current AWS spot instance pricing and availability
Based on this analysis, it automatically selects and spins up the optimal EC2 instance type — from a lightweight t3.medium for short clips to a powerful c6i.8xlarge or GPU-accelerated g4dn instance for 4K/8K content. Once encoding is complete, the instance terminates automatically.
The result is up to 60% cost reduction compared to fixed encoding infrastructure, with faster turnaround times and no manual intervention.
FFmpeg Encoding — Up to 8K Resolution
At the heart of our encoding pipeline is FFmpeg — the industry-standard open-source multimedia framework. We have built a sophisticated FFmpeg orchestration layer that supports:
- Resolution ladder: 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K (2160p), and 8K (4320p)
- Adaptive Bitrate (ABR): HLS and DASH manifests for smooth playback across all network conditions
- Codec support: H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, and VP9
- HDR encoding: HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision
- Audio encoding: AAC, Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos, and multi-channel audio
- Multi-language audio tracks: Encode and package multiple audio tracks per video
- Subtitle support: SRT, VTT, and TTML subtitle tracks embedded into HLS/DASH packages
All encoded assets are stored in Amazon S3 — our primary object storage for videos, audio files, images, thumbnails, subtitle files, and HLS/DASH manifests. S3 gives us 99.999999999% durability, global availability, and seamless CDN integration.
Amazon S3 — The Content Backbone
Every asset in our OTT platform lives in Amazon S3:
- Source videos — original uploaded files in any format
- Encoded outputs — all resolution variants and codec versions
- HLS/DASH manifests — adaptive streaming playlists
- Audio files — multi-language audio tracks
- Subtitle files — SRT, VTT files for all supported languages
- Images — thumbnails, posters, banners, and artwork
- Metadata — JSON files with content information
S3 integrates directly with Amazon CloudFront CDN for global low-latency content delivery, ensuring your viewers get fast load times regardless of their location.
Live Streaming — Serverless and On-Demand
Live streaming infrastructure is traditionally one of the most expensive components of an OTT platform — dedicated ingest servers, transcoding servers, and origin servers running 24/7 even when no one is streaming.
We have solved this with a fully on-demand live streaming architecture. When a broadcaster wants to go live:
- They click "Go Live" in the platform
- Our system automatically spins up a dedicated EC2 instance configured for live transcoding
- The broadcaster connects via RTMP from any streaming software (OBS, Streamlabs, etc.)
- The instance transcodes the stream in real time to multiple quality levels
- The live stream is delivered to viewers via HLS with low latency
- When the stream ends, the instance terminates automatically
No dedicated live streaming servers. No wasted resources. You pay only for the duration of the live stream.
RTMP Multi-Destination Broadcasting
One of our most powerful features is simultaneous multi-destination streaming. Broadcasters can stream to multiple platforms at the same time from a single source stream:
- 📺 YouTube Live — via RTMP to YouTube ingest servers
- 📘 Facebook Live — via RTMP to Facebook Live API
- 🎮 Twitch — for gaming and entertainment content
- 🐦 Twitter/X Live
- 📱 Instagram Live (via supported tools)
- 🌐 Custom RTMP destinations — any platform that accepts RTMP
Our system acts as an RTMP relay — the broadcaster sends one stream to us, and we fan it out to all configured destinations simultaneously. This eliminates the need for the broadcaster to have high upload bandwidth for multiple streams.
Live Stream Recording & VOD Conversion
Every live stream can be automatically recorded and converted to VOD (Video on Demand) content. Once the stream ends:
- The recording is saved to S3
- Our encoding pipeline automatically processes it through the full ABR encoding workflow
- It becomes available as on-demand content on your platform within minutes
- Chapters, thumbnails, and metadata are automatically generated
This gives your audience the ability to watch missed live events on demand — with the same quality and experience as pre-recorded content.
Content Delivery & Global Reach
All content — both VOD and live — is delivered through Amazon CloudFront, AWS's global CDN with 450+ edge locations worldwide. This ensures:
- Sub-second stream start times globally
- Automatic failover and redundancy
- DDoS protection built in
- Signed URLs for content protection and DRM
